ROBERT MACK / GRACE ZACCARDI
NOT GUILTY BY REASON OF INSANITY
16.06. - 25.08.2013
In the early eighties of the last century Robert Mack regularly visited a psychiatric clinic for the criminally insane for almost two years. He originally went there to prepare a documentary film and ended up realizing a unique photographic project with his project partner Grace Zaccardi. Thanks to the support of the hospital administration and the confidence that patients had in them both the artists were able to create a singularly broad and multifaceted pictorial cosmos of an institution which is alien for most of us. Beneath their esthetic quality the photographs offer an exclusive insight into the mostly unknown territory of a forensic psychiatry.
Mack and Zaccardi’s photographs paint a sensitive yet irritating picture of the institution and its residents. The portraits surprise with their almost unrestrained frankness and thereby question stereotypic beliefs of mentally ill in an institution of the criminally insane.
Only once, almost thirty years ago, one part of the project was exhibited at the Baltimore Museum of Art. After that the photographs did not seem presentable anymore and fell into oblivion. We found them during the research for the Julius Shulman exhibition „Cool and Hot“ and we are glad to show this tremendously exciting work for the first time outside the USA.
